Starting January 1st, Olympia will raise your payroll taxes hundreds of dollars each year for a program that will give you little, or nothing, in return.

I-1436 allows you to opt in — OR OPT OUT — of participating in Olympia’s new long-term care tax at any time. The choice of providing for your future stays in YOUR hands… not the government’s.

• Imagine a retirement program that forces you to pay in, but you receive no benefits if you retire within 10 years.
• Or a program that
takes away your benefits if you move to another state
(you can’t take it with you).
• Or a program with
NO income cap — even Social Security and Medicare don’t do that!
• Or a program that taxes you for your entire working life while your
benefits for a family are limited and could last less than a year.

VICTORY!

The initiative coalition that organized to end the long-term health payroll tax declared victory after Jay Inslee signed legislation to stop the Washington Cares Act in its tracks.

The Yes on 1436 initiative campaign was heading for certain qualification in late 2021 for next November’s ballot until Governor Inslee announced his support for setting the tax aside, thus making the ballot measure moot. Our coalition has been spared the expense of running a campaign.

Overwhelming majorities in the State House and Senate just voted to stop the Washington Cares Act for at least the next 18 months.  Unpopular since its inception with everyone except a few special interests, the Act failed to provide significant benefits while imposing a mandatory payroll tax on every wage earner in our state.

And while the tax has technically been “delayed” — make no mistake. A new payroll tax won't be any more popular in a year and a half than it is now. And we stand ready to act once again.

THE FACTS ABOUT I-1436

"Expect state agencies to continue a public-relations campaign, emphasizing all the good and none of the bad surrounding this entitlement program that dings the budgets of both high- and low-income wage earners. The WA Cares Fund only cares for and benefits the state’s mismanaged budget."

The new, unfair mandatory payroll tax:

  • Requires you to buy an expensive private insurance or pay for a limited state plan.
  • Forces you to pay in, but you receive no benefits if you retire within 10 years.
  • Takes away your benefits if you move to another state (can’t take it with you).
  • Taxes you with NO income cap — even Social Security and Medicare don’t do that!
  • Taxes you for your entire working life while your benefits are limited and could last less than a year.

I-1436 allows you to OPT OUT of the new long-term care tax at any time. No mandatory tax. No expensive insurance plan. The choice of providing for your future stays in YOUR hands… not government’s.

A bi-partisan group of legislators have asked the governor to delay it. If the politicians don’t trust this new tax why should you?

What is I-1436?

  • I-1436 is an Initiative to the Legislature—they are required by law to act on it.

  • I-1436 needs 325,000 valid signatures by December 31.

  • Lawmakers can pass I-1436 directly into law or they can send it to the voters to decide.
